How To Use Apple CarPlay
You have probably seen a demonstration of how to use Apple CarPlay, but it may be challenging to use it for the first time on your own. Using primarily voice-commands, Apple CarPlay lets the driver listen to music from their iPhone, answer and decline phone calls, follow directions to an unfamiliar place, and to talk to Siri, all without taking their eyes off the road. Mitchell Chevrolet does not condone careless driving, and that is why we support using Apple CarPlay.
Step 1:
To begin using Apple CarPlay, you must have your vehicle started, your iPhone in hand, and an authentic Apple iPhone charging cable. Unfortunately, many cords that aren't made by Apple do not support Apple CarPlay, and they will not function correctly. You can find authentic Apple iPhone charging cables at many locations. Just make sure you are buying the cord made by Apple! If you don't have an authentic Apple iPhone Charging cable, you can still attempt to follow this guide - it's worth a try!
Now that your vehicle is started and you have your iPhone and its charging cord, you can start working on getting Apple CarPlay set up.
Step 2:
Next you need to locate the USB port in your vehicle. Sometimes this USB port is found inside the middle console between the driver and front passenger seat. Other times, the USB port is near the touchscreen on the dash.
Step 3:
Once you have located your vehicle's USB port, plug in your iPhone's charging cable. Remember, most charging cords have a wall outlet converter - often referred to as wall bricks - attached to them. You will need to take this part off to fit into the USB port.
Important:
Sometimes there are multiple USB ports in vehicles. All of the USB ports will charge devices, but occasionally only one of them will support Apple CarPlay. If you have multiple USB ports, just experiment with them until you find which one starts Apple CarPlay.
Step 4:
Plug in the other end of the Apple charging cable into your iPhone like you would to charge it.
Step 5:
If you have a password or Touch ID enabled on our iPhone, go ahead and unlock it so that you can continue following these instructions.
Step 6:
If you have followed instruction, everything should be set up. Follow the directions on your vehicles touchscreen display and on your iPhone's display. Once you have answered all of the questions that are asked, you will see some of your iPhone's apps slide up onto your vehicle's touchscreen.
Step 7:
Everything on your screen should be familiar and easy-to-use, since Apple CarPlay is nearly mirroring your phone screen. Remember that being a carless driver is dangerous and use voice-commands to use Apple CarPlay. By pressing the Siri button on the touchscreen of your vehicle, you can ask Siri to do many things.
Here are some examples:
"Hey Siri, text Greg and tell him to take out the trash."
"What is the score of the WVU game now?"
"Play music by Elvis from my iPhone's music library."
"Give me directions from here to Charleston, WV."
If you still cannot get Apple CarPlay to work, your vehicle may not be compatible. Apple CarPlay is a feature that only comes with some vehicles. Most of the time, if your vehicle is 2015 or a newer model, and you have a touchscreen display with USB ports in your vehicle, you have Apple CarPlay.
